Visual Designer

About Zappar

We are Zappar, the world’s leading Augmented Reality platform and Creative Studio. It's our mission to democratize AR & MR.

Our ZapWorks toolkit puts the power of AR in the hands of designers and developers, enabling them to push the boundaries of interactive creativity, both with and without coding ability.

Our Creative Studio has created groundbreaking experiences for the world's biggest brands - showcasing how AR technology can transform packaging, illuminate events and elevate marketing campaigns with innovative, engaging content.

We are also the proud creators of All-new ZapBox, the first affordable, mixed reality kit that allows developers and businesses to reimagine how they design, build and create 3D experiences.

About the role

We love that our talented designers come from different backgrounds and have different strengths, from hand drawing to illustration and motion design. It all comes together to create some great UX flows and UI designs for our studio projects, and you can see the character of each designer peering through their work.

You’d be bringing your skills and unique background to the Zappar Creative Studio design team, and reporting into our Lead Designer.

The responsibilities for this role are split into 2 areas:

  • Help us craft better pitch decks and more impressive key visuals for the concepts we come up with, working closely with our 3D Artists, Executive Creative Director and sales team.
  • Help us create great client work, working closely with the Lead Designer, 3D artists, producers and developers.

A few things about you:

  • Experience in a professional environment. We don’t mind if it was in an agency, in-house or freelance, but we would like to see some demonstration of design work that you have led on.
  • Creative thinking. At Zappar we open up project ideation to everyone on the creative team, so we’re looking for someone with a creative side and a desire to contribute.
  • Tools. You are expected to work well with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Sketch. In addition, it would be beneficial to have working knowledge of Adobe After Effects, and/or 3D tools like Maya or Blender.
  • Design skills. You should be able to create rough user experience wireframes and pixel perfect user interface designs. Since we work with an eclectic mix of brands, we’ll need you to show flexibility on the styles used for each project, so we’re staying true to the brand, and what the project demands. Not everything needs to be flat and minimalistic, after all.
  • Excellent communication skills. As a lot of communication happens through Slack or video calls, we’ll need the successful candidate to be able to get their ideas across in an articulate way, without the need for in-person sessions.

Nice to have:

  • Some background working with 3D assets. Augmented reality includes a lot of 3D, so experience working with these assets to create your designs will be beneficial.
  • Basic knowledge of front end development. You won’t be asked to code, but some knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript might be beneficial in helping understand what can be achieved.

Please note that the above is just a wish-list. If you feel like you’ve got the right kind of skills, are keen to learn, and interested in our tech, then we’d still like to hear from you.

    Why apply for this position?

Zappar is one of the UK’s most exciting technology companies, working at the forefront of augmented reality, which is expected to have an enormous impact on the way that people communicate over the next decade. The adoption of AR is growing all the time, and it is a fantastic time to be working with this technology.

Work where you work best. We are currently fully remote, however our offices in Chiswick, London are open if you prefer. We have been able to adapt to the changing work environment by focusing on great communication throughout the business.

As a company, we are deeply committed to the growth of our people. We understand that all talented individuals have ambitions to develop new skills and experiences and move forward in their careers. To help you achieve your goals, and to align them with our own, we hold quarterly performance reviews, have developed a mentoring scheme to pair junior staff with more senior colleagues, and have a number of initiatives such as a training allowance to support you.

Zappar actively welcomes applications from all groups. If you might need any extra information or help with the application process, please contact Shaun McInally-Buckley (Head of People).
